The quiet cost of churn

Company notes — December 2025

Note 04

Everyone can name the loud costs of frequent transacting — the fees, the taxes, the spreads. What is less accounted for is the quiet cost: what churn does to the quality of the ownership itself.

Before a transaction is an economic event, it is an administrative one. Something must be recorded, registered, transferred and filed. Multiply that across a portfolio in constant motion, and records age in months instead of years, and reconciliations fall behind.

Churn costs its owners in three ways: record decay, as motion outruns documentation; attention fragmentation, as a churned portfolio spends attention on exits and entries instead of upkeep; and decision fatigue, as every transaction borrows judgement from the next.

The test we apply is simple: activity must answer a question the asset asked, not a feeling the owner had. When a holding does need to move, the reason is written down. If the only reason is news or boredom, it is churn wearing a reason's clothes.

Next in this series.

Records are the asset behind the assets — on files that defend their owners.
