Records are the asset behind the assets

Company notes — November 2025

Note 05

Every holding is only as durable as its paperwork. This note is about the layer underneath every asset: its records, and why the quality of a file is inseparable from the quality of the ownership.

Strip away the ceremony and a private asset is a claim. What makes it yours is a structure of registrations, titles, registers and executed documents — and that structure has a physical form: the file. Holdings decay administratively before they decay economically.

Good records are few, current and complete, and we hold every file to three standards:

What makes records good is not the medium but the architecture — an index a stranger can navigate, a naming scheme that survives its author, and a single place where the whole is reconciled each year.

Next in this series.

Holding through cycles — what history asks of a long-term holder.
