Company notes — March 2026
Note 01
For a private owner, the decisive move is often to do nothing — properly. This note sets out why we treat patience as a strategy rather than a mood.
A patient owner is never just sitting still; they are actively declining the trade that would feel clever and the restructure that would look busy. Every year a holding is kept unchanged, a hundred small decisions were made.
Patience only works when it is underwritten by structure. We hold assets that can be held without constant intervention, keep registers reconciled annually, and hold categories that do not need to perform in any given year. The annual review is what separates patience from neglect: each holding is looked at, the question "still held, and still held well?" is answered in writing, and the answer is filed.
Patience compounds in a currency no performance table tracks: the absence of errors. Each avoided transaction avoids its costs and its risk of mistake, and each year of clean records makes the next year's decisions cheaper.
